3 Cheers for Klang!
Categories: Thoughts

On Tuesday’s leaders’ meeting at church, Pastor Moy How proudly announced the completion of the Christmas Home-e Manual. It was the culmination of a two-month effort from my Youth cell group. We all had fun planning the activities, games and drama script which has a LOTR flavour.

To end his announcement of our Christmas cell group party plans, he appreciated the people behind the work put in – the Klang Youth Group.

At this, I heard some people saying, “Wah, Klang ah?”

Maybe they are suprised that there were cell groups from Klang in the church. In most PJ peoples’ minds, Klang is a very far and forsaken place. Whenever I tell people that I live in Klang but work in PJ, they will go all agog and say, “So far ah??!” Actually, it’s not that far with all the highways these days. I even reach home after work earlier than some folks who stay in PJ itself.

Or maybe (I hope this is not the case!), they were thinking that nothing fantastic can come out of Klang. If that is the case, then it’s a bittersweet triumph. Sad because they think that way. Triumphant because Klangites have managed to come up with a one-of-a-kind Christmas manual for not only the church but other churches in Malaysia and other countries to use during their Christmas party.

Also Klang has many other plusses as pointed out by my dear friend, Jude. We are home to the famous Bah Kut Teh (stewed pork in delicious gravy), cheap and fresh seafood, and cheap and good quality provisions. Main importers from Shah Alam and PJ would come down to Klang to get their provisions.

I look around and I do see the many imperfections in Klang. The potholes on the road. The walkways littered with garbage. The many crows that reign supreme in the Klang skyline. The traffic that is getting more and more horrendous each day.

But I also see the friendly smile of the wan tan mee seller. The unpretentious and simple folks that make up the Klang community. The ability to speak Hokkien everywhere I go and not having to struggle with my half-past-six Cantonese. The many old haunts and pals that brings back many sweet memories.

Klang is home to me. For all the glitzy and clean look that PJ has to offer, I have never been able to call it home.

And yes, there are a lot of good things that come from Klang. Here’s 3 cheers to you, my beloved town. You rock! :D
