Bread, anyone?

Feb 28 2004

I don’t know why exactly I’m fascinated with bread vans of obscure brands. Every morning if I leave at a certain time, I would encounter one of these bread vans on the road.

A strange sense of nostalgia would snuck up to my heart when I see those weather-beatened vans with faint letterings bearing names like, “Roti Sedap” (Delicious Bread) or Kuih Baulu (a traditional Malay cake).

I mean, who in the city consumes brands like these nowadays? It’s really strange to see such bread vans almost everyday when I don’t encounter them in the supermarket aisles. Even when I do go to the sundry shop, those brands are not to be seen.

Gone were the days when the bread man would come down the street where I live. Man, I still remember how good and delicious all those ‘Bengali’ bread used to taste like. I especially love the ‘Roti Manis’ (sweet bread). Now that’s so good, you can even eat it on its own. I have to be honest, I never could eat Gardenia on its own. So in my opinion, its famous tag line rightly belongs to the one and only Roti Manis.

Maybe one day if I should ever come across Roti Sedap, I’ll give it a try. It’ll be sad if they come to the same fate as the bread man of days of yore.
