The Need for God
Categories: Thoughts

I was talking to this vivacious girl recently, about the gospel and life in general, when she apologetically admitted that she had never thought about God nor her purpose in life because there was simply no need to. She is blessed with a loving family and surrounded by good friends. Thus, she has absolutely no need for God.

It’s not a strange thing to encounter people who have lived their lives in a blissful way without acknowledging the need for presence of God. It’s not hard to understand where they are coming from.

On the flip side of it, even when I was very young, before anyone told me about God, I always felt that there is Someone who created and planned for everything and is watching over me. As I grew and journeyed through life, there are many things that happened that cannot be explained as mere coincidences. The natural beauty and majesty of the places I travel to shouts of His mighty handiwork. The wonderfully formed anatomy of a human body speaks of an ingenious Creator.

It is my hope that through my daily jottings, I will be able to document these incidences down faithfully.

A friend faithfully kept a journal the size of a novel during his darkest moments. Thanks to his journal, he is able to share in minute detail the handiwork of God upon his life. His testimonies encouraged me to be diligent in journalling my walk with God.

Back to the girl I was talking to, I told her that whenever in future she feels lost or troubled, she can always cry out to God who will not turn a deaf ear to those who seek Him with all their hearts. I pray that she will come to know that God has been working behind the scenes all this while.

When a man takes one step toward God, God takes more steps toward that man than there are sands in the worlds of time.

The girl, like most people, felt no need for God – primarily because God is viewed as a servant – someone/thing one call if necessary to put things right.

It leans towards a theological view much like that of those who worship idols – for it is there to be called upon when necessary – in trouble, in crisis etc.

The key is to shake the girl from her presumptious imagination of God as a servant – to the Almighty, one that requires us to be accountable to Him.

We ourselves need to present a lifestyle that shows God who is not someone who helps us in need (which He does) but also as Someone who ultimately Rules over us as OWNER.

A person who sees no need for God – has not seen the ugliness & depravity of his/her sin in the light of the glory and perfection of God.

The girl is not aware of the need for Forgiveness.

We need to present a picture of a Righteous & Holy Judge of sin.

It is our responsibility to share the reality of the need for forgiveness from our depravity/corruption.

The other aspect of purpose in God and fellowship with God is all great and good – but we need to strike at the strike zone.
