Being Connected
Coolgal’s bro dropping an entry here….
Woke up this morning at 6.05am. Actually I woke up a little earlier but decided to doze off again. Afterall, last night’s traffic jam and work made me more tired than usual. I heard my father’s footstep on the stairs and knew it was time.
Then, I remembered last night that my mother said there was a call last evening. The phone ringed only once for that call. Other than people realizing that they called the wrong number, another reason is that the Telekom guy is testing out the line. I believe that they did something to it and perhaps the Internet is up again.
Quickly, I powered up my PC, anxiously looking at my modem lights, to see whether there is any vital signs. And behold, the lights held steady without a blink. I launched my email client (Mozilla Thunderbird) and it was getting all the mails, sifting out the junk as usual.
Thank God! The Internet is on! After more than a week of no connection to the Internet, it is as if I have lost a vital means of communication. Yeah, I do have Internet at work but it isn’t the same. The lights blinking away, indicating that it was transferring data at top speed was a sight to behold. Okay, now that the backdrop is out of the way, it is time for some reflection…
After getting Streamyx in January 2003, I have since taken for granted the Internet connection at home. Not at first, but as broadband connectivity slowly sinks at home, I always expect it to be there, ready to get me wherever I need to be at anytime. This was important because in Degree, there were lots of research and questions to answer. Internet is the critical link I need to complete them.
This incident of no Internet for an extended period of time really brought about my appreciation of connectivity at home. I am very grateful to God for answering my prayer. More than that, He has taught me patience and to focus my attention on more important things in life. Never to take for granted what has been given to us.
This won’t be the last time I will need to learn that because humans tend to forget, a lot. Just like the Israelites in the wilderness complaining away and forgot that God have saved them from suffering in a magnificent way, I too forget from time to time. But with each time comes a stronger sense of God’s goodness in my life and a better perspective of life through God’s eyes when things/people are taken away from us.
